Americans Abroad - J.C. Leyendecker and the European Academic Influence on American Illustration @ The Society of Illustrators, May 21 - July 12, 2008

First of All, If you have not gone yet, you still have a chance, if not I will disown you as of July 12! Seriously very harsh, but it is truly AMAZING, especially to see so many of his paintings at once! His work makes me feel criminal, I want to steal it off the walls, especially "Butterfly Couple" below. I torment myself about stealing the only book available of his artwork from the library after a professor suggested so! Well I'm officially obsessed, I bought the catalogue, postcards, & magnets!!!

Just go, seriously, it's free. . .

"Butterfly Couple" - J.C. Leyendecker

I've never even seen mention of this painting before, it's so adorably sweet! Some where on display it mentions he did about 322 covers for "The Saturday Evening Post" & Rockwell retired after completing the same amount out of respect! Seriously though where are all those paintings? Private collections I suppose, please share! However there were a decent amount at the show & plenty of time to drool over every brush stroke! Oh can anyone EXPLAIN his grid system, specifically the diagonal lines?

"Raj's Circus Fantasy"- J.C. Leyendecker

Hello? Where do you get reference for this in 1916? What you are missing in this cropped picture is the adorably dressed monkeys running on dogs!!! These are just close ups of a couple of paintings! His brushstrokes were so exact! Every painting was so vibrantly colorful & exquisitely elegant! So please. . . go!
